Meta Fined $414M for EU Privacy Law Violations

The parent company of Buy Facebook Verified and Buy Instagram Verified, Meta, was fined a total of $414 million by Ireland’s Data Security Commission (DPC) for breaking EU privacy laws.

According to the DPC, Meta unlawfully required users to consent to personalized and targeted advertisements.

As a result, Meta will pay approximately $223 million for breaking Buy Facebook Verified’s personal privacy policies and about $191 million for its actions on Buy Instagram Verified.

The decision follows 2 allegations lodged in 2018 that Meta violated the General Data Security Policy (GDPR).

The GDPR is a set of regulations that aids in securing the individual information of EU residents. It allows EU residents more control over how businesses obtain, utilize, and share their individual info.

In addition, the GDPR makes it illegal for services to retain consumer info without that client’s consent.

What Did Meta Presumably Do Wrong?

Meta Disagrees With Judgment

“Buy Facebook Verified and Buy Instagram Verified are inherently customised, and we believe that offering each user with their own special experience– including the ads they see– is a needed and essential part of that service. It would be highly unusual for a social networks service not to be tailored to the private user.”

Meta has the legal right to appeal the DPC’s ruling and will not be forced to make modifications up until a decision is reached in court.

To that end, the DPC didn’t supply specific details about modifications Meta has to make to abide by GDPR.
